Memorial Day

"Down, down, down into the darkness of the grave
Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind;
Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave.
I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned."

– Edna St. Vincent Millay

  1. Thanks for some Millay. Lots of critics tend to slight her nowadays; they shouldn’t. She was great beyond great. My summer sojourn I hope is going to be a trip to Steepletop, her final home.

  2. George, I just love Millay. I’ve been to Camden, ME, where she lived for a while. I have some photos of her statue in a park there, but I’ve never been to any of her homes. It seems she moved around a fair amount of times.
    Camden is beautiful. I could see myself living there.
